Fishing Guide — Spots, Best Catches & Upgrades in Nivalis Nights

Fishing is one of Nivalis Nights' marquee life-sim activities — and one of its smartest business tools. Your private boat opens the city's canals, and the fish you pull from them can be sold for profit, cooked into premium menu items, or given as gifts to the citizens you're courting.

This guide covers how fishing works, where to fish, what to catch, and how to turn fish into profit.

Why Fishing Matters

Fishing is the only activity in Nivalis Nights that pays you in three currencies at once:

  1. Money — high-value seafood sells for a premium at market.
  2. Business — premium seafood dishes give your restaurant a food-cost advantage competitors can't match.
  3. Relationships — fish are excellent gifts. A personalized catch for the right NPC moves relationships faster than most store-bought gifts.

The Boat

Your private boat is the fishing platform — and a general life-sim tool. The city of Nivalis stretches from ocean to clouds, and the canals are your highways between districts.

Boat upgrades: Expect upgrade paths for the boat itself — speed, range, and fishing gear. A better boat reaches better spots and carries more.

How Fishing Works

Fishing is a minigame: cast, wait for a bite, and play the line against the fish. Pre-release info points to the following mechanics:

  • Weather matters. Clear days are the best fishing days. Storms churn the water and change what's available — sometimes for the better, sometimes not.
  • Time of day matters. Different fish run at different hours, much like real fishing.
  • Spot matters. Different stretches of canal and ocean hold different fish. Exploration pays.

Fishing Spots (What We Know)

Full spot maps will be built after launch, but the structure is clear:

  • Canal spots — in-city fishing. Convenient, accessible, and good for everyday ingredient fishing.
  • Ocean spots — richer waters with higher-value catches, reached by taking the boat further out.
  • District waters — neighborhoods have their own waters, and local demand affects what your catch is worth in each market.
Strategy: Fish where you are, and sell where it's expensive. Your boat is also a transport tool — a premium catch caught in one district can be worth double in another.

Best Catches (Pre-Launch Guide)

Exact species lists will be documented after release, but the categories are predictable:

Catch TypeBest ForWhen
----------------------------
Everyday fishIngredient fishing, cheap menu itemsAny time, canal spots
Premium fishRestaurant menu differentiationClear days, ocean spots
Rare catchesGifts, market speculationWeather windows, specific hours
Seasonal fishCompletionists, market spikesWeather/season dependent
The gift rule: Before selling a rare or premium catch, check your relationship goals — a perfect fish for the right NPC is worth more than its market price.

Weather & Fishing

Weather is the strongest lever on fishing success:

  • Clear days — best all-around fishing. Plan your fishing trips around the forecast.
  • Rain — fish may be scarcer, but this is prime greenhouse and indoor time anyway.
  • Storms — churn changes the catch table. Sometimes high-value fish only run in stormy water; sometimes the water is too rough to fish at all. Experiment carefully — don't take a good boat out in a bad storm.
  • Snow — cold water, slower fishing, but cold-water species can be rare and valuable.
Strategy: Keep a fishing weather log. In a few weeks you'll know exactly which conditions produce which catches in your waters.

Fishing as a Supply Chain

For business-minded players, fishing plugs directly into the restaurant economy:

  1. Base dishes — everyday fish keeps menu costs low.
  2. Premium dishes — ocean catches become signature dishes with margins no competitor can match.
  3. Seasonal spikes — when a fish is scarce city-wide, your stock is worth more — sell the surplus, keep the best for the menu.

Combine fishing with a greenhouse (for staples) and you've built the cheapest, most resilient supply chain in the game — see the Best Business Guide for the full system.

Fishing & Relationships

Fish are social currency:

  • Gifts: Tailored catches impress. A fish that matches an NPC's tastes (their favorite dish, their district's specialty) is a relationship accelerator.
  • Together time: Inviting NPCs on fishing trips is the kind of shared activity the relationship system rewards.
  • Status: A reputation as a skilled angler opens conversations — and possibly quests — you'd otherwise miss.

Fishing Checklist for Beginners

  • [ ] Get the boat unlocked early — it's your fastest route to premium income
  • [ ] Fish on clear days, manage inventory on rainy days
  • [ ] Sell in expensive districts, not where you caught the fish
  • [ ] Keep premium catches for gifts before you sell them
  • [ ] Log weather conditions and catches to learn your local waters
  • [ ] Feed the restaurant before the market — menu margins beat raw sales
